There is one character named Hoid who appears in every book (although he often goes by a pseudonym and is easy to miss!), and sometimes characters from one series are referenced or appear in other series. The different novels and series are separate, but are related in subtle ways. Each novel or series takes place on a different planet within the cosmere, that operates based on different forces or “shards” that create different kinds of magic and motivations for its characters. What even is “Cosmere”?Ĭosmere is the universe that all of Brandon Sanderson’s novels and series take place within. DMG Entertainment bought the rights to Sanderson’s Cosmere novels in a film deal in late 2016, and is currently working to make a virtual-reality experience of The Stormlight Archive. Now is the greatest time to get into reading Cosmere, Sanderson’s epic fantasy series, so let us present to you a beginner’s guide to his books.

He is known for creating diverse and complex fictional worlds in what is known as the Cosmere series, which includes enticing strong female characters, internally conflicted villains, unclichéd romance plots, and unique new types of magic.

One part Ocean’s Eleven, one part Lord of the Rings, one part Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, one part My Fair Lady.Brandon Sanderson is one of the most popular, award-winning fantasy authors of the moment. Mistborn: Heist story about a young woman recruited into a gang of thieves, trained to use magic and to imitate a noblewoman, then used in a plot to try and rob (and hopefully overthrow) the immortal emperor of the world. He tries to unravel the world’s magic system (which is now non-functional, and potentially the source of the disease) while surviving in terrible circumstances and trying to bring civilization back to those locked in the city with him Here are quick descriptions of a couple of my books to help you chooseĮlantris: Story of a man who catches a terrible magical disease, and is thrown into a prison city for those with that disease. Since these books aren’t interconnected, reading them in the sequential order of the respective series is recommended. Recommended Reading Order for Non-Cosmere Books The Alloy of Law is an okay jumping in spot for the Cosmere, but keep in mind that this book has spoilers for the original Mistborn trilogy. Finding these easter eggs is one of the things that makes re-reading the books so much fun. There are tidbits in each of the books that inform the other books, but you don’t have to notice these things to enjoy the story by itself.

That said, it really doesn’t matter which Cosmere series you start with, which means any of these books are good starting points: I recommended reading the books in sequential order rather than trying to dive into the second book in a series without having read the first book.
